Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. As a result of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
